Abstract: Drawing authority and funds from the Superfund program, the Brownfields Economic Redevelopment Initiative provides funding assistance to characterize and clean up minimally contaminated sites, often idled or abandoned factories, as a prelude to their redevelopment. Issues include the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to set up the program and the proper disposition of appropriated funds. This report reviews the status of the program, its funding, and legislative issues.
