Abstract: Georgia has faced difficulty in asserting central government control over its northern Pankisi Gorge area bordering Russia's breakaway Chechnya region. Russia maintains that Chechen rebels and international terrorists located in the Gorge are making forays into Russia to attack its forces, and has threatened an incursion into the Gorge. The United States is providing training and equipment to help Georgia combat terrorism and reassert control in the Gorge.
