Abstract: This provides an overview of the final rule for "Standards for the Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information" ("privacy rule") that was issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and went into effect on April 14, 2001. Entities covered by the privacy rule had until April 2003 to comply, with the exception of small health plans who have until 2004.
