Number: RS20518 Title: Mozambique and Other Recent Flood Disasters: Comparing the U.S. and International Responses Authors: Lois B. McHugh, Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Abstract: Some have criticized the U.S. response to the recent floods in southern Africa. Their concern has been that the U.S. response has been too little and too late in comparison with disasters in other parts of the world. U.S. spokesmen argue that their response has been appropriate and timely. The U.S. government has responded to eight flood disasters thus far in FY2000 in addition to the current flooding in Southern Africa. This report and the table on page 6 compare the U.S. and international responses to each. Pages: 6 Date: April 17, 2000
