Abstract: Since 1996, officials of the People's Republic of China (PRC) have grown concerned about the activities of minority nationalities in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, in China's far northwest. Beijing perceives a threat to national security in these activities, and has increased police actions in the region as a result. Many human rights organizations allege that China's policies have resulted in increased human rights violations. Developments in Xinjiang have also attracted the attention of Members of Congress.
