Abstract: Lawmakers and others are examining the statutory and regulatory framework for enforcement of the HIPAA Administrative Simplification standards, and ways to ensure that agencies use their enforcement authority to the fullest extent under HIPAA to address improper uses and disclosures of protected health information. The privacy and security of health information is also recognized as a critical element of transforming the health care system through the use of health information technology.
