Number: RL33279 Title: The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Program Authors: Judith A. Johnson, Domestic Social Policy Division Abstract: The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Program makes The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act of 2006 (P.L. 109- 415, H.R. 6143) reauthorized the Ryan White program through September 30, 2009. Unlike the previous reauthorization, which extended the program for five years, the compromise legislation provided a three-year extension, eliminating the final two years in the original version of the bill, which would have resulted in reduced funding in certain areas. In addition, the provision at the end of P.L. 109-415, (Sec. 703) repeals the Ryan White program, Title XXVI of the Public Health Service Act, as of FY2010. Some members have expressed the intention to revisit Ryan White over the next three years, to examine whether the structure of the entire program should be revamped to reflect the current distribution of HIV/AIDS in the United States.
