Abstract: Congressional interest in dam safety generally falls into three areas: (1) dam security and the potential for acts of terrorism at major U.S. dam sites; (2) prevention of potential dam failures due to structural deficiencies; and (3) recovery from dam failures. This report focuses on the second category, because it is a topic that will likely become more important as the nation's dams age; further, it has gained additional attention in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
