Abstract: The Treasury Department performs a host of critical functions. Foremost among them are protecting the nation's financial system from a variety of financial crimes, administering the tax code and collecting tax revenue, managing and accounting for the public debt, administering the government's finances, regulating and supervising financial institutions, and producing and distributing coins and currency. This report examines the President's budget request for Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in FY2006, some of the key policy issues it raises, and congressional action on the request.
