Number: RL31756 Title: Iraq: Debate over U.S. Policy Authors: Richard P. Cronin, Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division Abstract: This report provides information and analysis concerning a number of basic issues in the debate over whether and under what conditions, the United States should launch a preemptive attack on Iraq. Some of the issues are potentially resolvable by the introduction of new and persuasive evidence; others tend to involve fundamental differences in perspective. The focus of debate is likely to shift, over time, especially in response to how the U.S.-Iraq confrontation plays out during the late winter and early spring of 2003.
