Title: Transitional Medical Assistance (TMA) Under Medicaid

Abstract: This report provides an overview of TMA. While Section 1925 of the Social Security Act outlines the provisions requiring states to provide TMA for up to 12 months, states have considerable flexibility in designing and implementing their TMA programs. To better understand these programs, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) conducted a survey of state TMA policies in effect on July 1, 2002. This report summarizes the results of the survey and discusses legislation introduced to extend, and in some instances to modify, TMA.
