Abstract: This report examines public charter school accountability, with a focus on the federal role. In examining charter school accountability, however, we first consider to whom, for what, and how charter schools are held accountable and then examine how charter school accountability is being carried out in the states. We then provide an overview of the federal role in charter school accountability and describe how accountability provisions in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) apply to public charter schools.
