Abstract: This report provides an overview of the provisions of the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968, which establishes a scheme prohibiting the possession of firearms by individuals who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. In addition to outlining the elements of the prohibition on firearm possession and statutory defenses available to such a charge, this report discusses the disposition of legal challenges to the constitutional validity of the Amendment's proscriptions.
