Abstract: Leaders of Western Hemisphere countries have agreed to negotiate a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) by 2005. Their objective is to promote economic growth and democracy by eliminating barriers to trade in goods and services, and in investment. If diplomats reach agreement in these negotiations, free trade in most agricultural commodities and food products in the hemisphere will occur by 2015.
