Abstract: This report discusses several issues related to DNA evidence and legislation proposed during the 106th Congress to address them. The issues addressed include the nationwide backlog of unanalyzed DNA samples from convicted offenders and unsolved cases; kinds of DNA profiles that might be included in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a set of law-enforcement databases; and postconviction testing of DNA evidence. The report also discusses current provisions in federal law.
