Abstract: This study suggests that patents play a significant role in the ability of small, entrepreneurial firms in the biotechnology industry to acquire capital for R&D. Experience teaches that investors may be wary of uncertainties surrounding patent rights, leading to diminished capital infusions into the biotechnology market.
