Abstract: This report provides an overview discussion of the economic, social, and political impact of the Asian financial crisis that began in Thailand in July 1997 and progress toward recovery. It surveys the scale and scope of the crisis, reviews the current status of the most affected Asian economies, examines some ongoing liabilities, and discusses the prospects for the emergence of a post-crisis economic model for the region-one that relies less on high corporate debt and government-influenced resources allocation and more on equity capital and entrepreneurship.
