Abstract: On October 7, 1998, the President signed the Higher Education Amendments of 1998 (H. R. 6) into law (P.L. 105-244). This legislation reauthorizes the Higher Education Act (HEA), which includes the main federal programs of student assistance for postsecondary education. This report provides an overview of the main HEA programs, and summarizes the main provisions of the House and Senate bills and final HEA Amendments of 1998.
