Abstract: This report reviews constitutional and legislative provisions for filling vacancies in the office of the Vice President of the United States. It provides historical context for vacancies and succession governed by the Succession Acts of 1792 (1 Stat. 240); 1885 (24 Stat. 1); and 1947 (61 Stat. 380). It reviews origins and passage of the 25th Amendment and examines the amendment's provisions relating to vice presidential vacancies. It examines action by the 93rd Congress in 1973 and 1974 to fill two vacancies, including context and precedents adopted at the time.
