Abstract: Since May of 1998, Russia has been in the midst of the latest--and probably the most serious--in a series of economic crises. The crisis occurs as the Congress considers legislation to authorize funding for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and as economies in Asia and Latin America suffer financial reversals. This report examines the major economic indicators of the crisis, its direct and indirect causes, and the implications for the Russian economy and Russian economic reform. It also analyzes the main options available to Russia in resolving the crisis.
